Late spring to early summer is the best time to enjoy Matcha products in Japan. Matcha is a concentrated powdered form of green tea that has been used for centuries in China and Japan. In fact, the term “matcha” and its pronunciation (maa-chuh) are derived from Japanese words meaning “ground” and “tea". Matcha products are available to purchase all year long, however Matcha is actually a seasonal tea, so the best time to enjoy Matcha green tea and products is when the tea leaves are harvested in the Spring, when the plant leaves have three to five new leaves.
Tencha is the name for tea leaves used to make Matcha. There are three processes that the Tencha leaves goes through to become Matcha and that is 1) Sorting, 2) Drying, and 3) Grinding into a fine powder. There are two regions in Japan that are widely considered to produce the best Matcha and those regions are Nishio city in Aichi prefecture and Uji city in Kyoto prefecture. They are both generally considered the top producing areas for Matcha.
Matcha can be integrated with many different food and drink products, and I often enjoy Matcha Smoothie, so I’m sharing one of my favorite Smoothie recipe below for you to enjoy.
